Overview

This guide walks you through downloading and installing the Microsoft 365 Office apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more. Steps are provided for both Windows and Mac.

Prerequisites

  • Your Microsoft 365 email address and password
  • A Microsoft 365 license that includes the desktop apps, assigned to your account
  • Windows: you must be an administrator on the PC
  • Mac: your Mac login password (you may be asked for it during the install)

Step 1 - Go to the Install Page and Sign In

  1. Open a web browser and go to aka.ms/office-install
  2. When the sign-in window appears, enter your Microsoft 365 email address and password
  3. Complete any required security verification

Step 2 - Download the Office Apps

  1. After signing in, you will land on the My account page
  2. Under Office apps & devices, click Install Office (if you do not see it, click Apps & devices in the left-hand menu)
  3. If a menu appears, select Microsoft 365 apps to begin the download

Step 3 - Install Office on Windows

  1. Depending on your browser, click Run (Microsoft Edge), Setup (Google Chrome), or Save File (Firefox)
  2. If a User Account Control prompt asks whether to allow this app to make changes to your device, click Yes
  3. The installation will begin automatically and may take several minutes
  4. When you see the message You're all set! Office is installed now and an animation plays, click Close

Step 4 - Install Office on a Mac

  1. Once the download completes, open Finder, go to Downloads, and double-click the Microsoft Office installer.pkg file (the name might vary slightly)
  2. On the first installation screen, click Continue
  3. Review the software license agreement and click Continue
  4. Click Agree to accept the license terms
  5. Choose how you want to install Microsoft 365 and click Continue
  6. Review the disk space requirements or change the install location, then click Install
    • To install only specific apps instead of the full suite, click Customize and uncheck the apps you do not want
  7. Enter your Mac login password if prompted, then click Install Software
  8. When the installation finishes, click Close
NOTE: If you see an error that the installer cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer, wait 10 seconds and move the downloaded file to your Desktop. Then hold Control, click the file, and open it.

Step 5 - Activate Office on Windows

  1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of your screen and type the name of an app, such as Word
  2. Click the app icon in the search results to open it
  3. When the app opens, accept the license agreement

Office is now activated and ready to use. If the Activation Wizard appears, complete the steps in the wizard to finish activation.

Step 6 - Activate Office on a Mac

  1. Click the Launchpad icon in the Dock to display all of your apps
  2. Click the Microsoft Word icon (or another Microsoft 365 app icon)
  3. When the What's New window opens, click Get Started to begin activation

Notes

  • If you are prompted to sign in during activation, use your Microsoft 365 email address and password
  • The 64-bit version is installed by default unless a 32-bit version of Office is already detected on the PC
  • If you do not see an install option after signing in, a license may not be assigned to your account - contact Twilight I.T. for assistance
  • A slow internet connection, firewall, or antivirus software can make the installation take longer than expected
