How to Fix Office Apps That Won't Open or Keep Crashing Print

Overview

If Word, Excel, or another Office app will not open or keeps crashing, try the following steps.

Step 1 - Restart Your Computer

A simple restart often clears temporary issues. Try this first before proceeding.

Step 2 - Update Office

1. Open any Office app
2. Click File > Account > Update Options > Update Now
3. Install any available updates

Step 3 - Run Office Repair (Windows)

1. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features
2. Select Microsoft 365 Apps
3. Click Change > Quick Repair
4. If issues persist, run Online Repair

Step 4 - Reinstall Office (Mac)

1. Drag the Office apps to the Trash from the Applications folder
2. Download the latest version from www.office.com
3. Reinstall and sign in again
